Earlier this year, I wrote about an article I found on Waggleroom about TaylorMade introducing a driver with interchangeable weights and shafts. The math behind the weights and shafts came to 1071 possible configurations (just what I needed; 1071 possibilities to mess things up) and all it would cost was $1000.
Well, the folks at Alpha Golf contacted me because they had a custom driver that had 3 interchangeable shafts and wanted to know if I’d give it a test drive. All I had to do was review it here on Acemakr.com and if I liked it, I could put it in my bag. I also shared it with others here at the ranch. Feedback was good. Anyway….
The three shafts are Alpha Golf branded Platinum 65 with 360 degree frequency calibration. I received three, one each in regular flex, senior flex, and stiff flex. I tried them all both on the range and on the course. The senior flex worked best with my swing speed.
Much of the battle to hit quality shots comes from the confidence you have in your equipment. Right out of the box, I knew I’d have that confidence because the head design is simple and traditional. When addressing the ball, I could feel myself smiling – the look was terrific and the fairway looked like it was 150 yards wide and impossible to miss. My handicap index has dropped 4.3 strokes since this experiment started and I attribute some of that to hitting more fairways and having shorter approach shots.
What about distance? Well, I figure that I’ve added about 10% total distance beyond what I’d normally expect. (Back in Angel Fire the increase was 20%) So, a 225 yard tee shot here at the ranch now goes and rolls to just under 250 yards. Remember that I play in an age restricted golf community and tee shots of that distance are considered huge. I find I’m hitting pitching wedge or shorter wedge approach shots while my playing partners are hitting mid-irons. That’s another advantage – more greens in regulation.
Finally, a word or two about the sound from a well hit tee shot. It’s what you’d expect – a nice crisp ‘ting!
But, in the end, it’s not what I think even though I’ve had a great experience with this club. I’d suggest that you check it out by starting right here with the write up on the Alpha Golf web site. Would I do it again? You bet, in a heartbeat.
