Course Management
One could argue that good course management is directly related to good play - if you can hit the right shot, you're good at course management. The flip side is to deal with the ups and downs the course throws at you over the course of 18 holes.
The reining Masters champion, Zack Johnson, relied on his wedge game at the par 5s. He didn't shoot for a single green on any of the 5 pars on his second shot. He managed that component of his game by relying on his wedge play. For him, it sure paid off.
At the other end of the spectrum are some of the guys I play with - they have 14 opportunities to hit driver and they do it. Nevermind the alternatives, driver is their choice. What that does though, is give them lots of practice with recovery shots and those 45 to 60 yard pesky wedge shots.
Just a retorical - Why do most golfers opt for the high risk shot that promises high reward if you can pull it off. There's a reason your handicap is what it is. It's not unlike the high handicapper plumb bobbing a 4 footer on 18 for an 8. Is it?
