The $6.1 billion plane order that Air Canada had placed with Boeing was cancelled this past Saturday after the airline’s pilots rejected a contract to fly the planes.
The reason for rejecting the contract was that the airline wanted to link pilots wages to the size and speed of the planes as well as the weight and revenue potential of the planes they fly. Points here to Air Canada – emerged from bankruptcy in September and they are showing some creativity.
What really hurts is that the 787 is as much as 30 percent cheaper to operate than the 767 its set to replace. Almost half its weight is from carbon fiber components and the lighter airframe makes is much more fuel efficient. That’s a 30 percent savings Air Canada won’t see.
