Getting Recognized

Yesterday as I was getting ready to check out of our cubicle farm, a colleague called me over. He wanted to know the meaning of my domain name, acemakr.com. As he’s not a golfer, the tie-in was not obvious so I obliged with a short explanation about holes-in-one and such.

Then he told me he just discovered my blog and was amazed at the amount of information and the time it must have taken to put it all together. I started the blog back in March and I did not advertise within Sabre on purpose. I figured if anyone was interested, they’d find me. Well, guess what? It took an email to everyone in Labs (my work group) with a permalink to the In Charge post to get recognized.

I’ve been discovered. Then I got to thinking how easy it would be for others to discover me. Less that a week after landing at Sabre, the author of the fine work at speakeasy(x) found me. That was about 3 months ago. Since then, I’ve had no feedback from anyone at Sabre. Kind of disappointing but I must be doing something right – a Google search for Gary Potter put my blog on the first screen in position 7 (my guess is that’s based on the boost I got from a mention on ongoing) and a MSN Beta Search puts me at number one.

But, what is clear is that a corporate blogging initiative at Sabre is going to be a bit harder than I thought. What I do know is that it won’t be because our tool of choice is hard to use. We installed Roller in a day and our first users are from my work group. It will stay that way until we are able to tweak things to our liking. New user registration to a first blog post in less than 10 minutes – that is what it took someone whose only knowledge about blogging was how it was spelled. That made me smile.
