Several years ago, and for many before that, I worked for Terry Jones, who at the time was Sabre’s CIO. Terry had a vision that travel agents or travelers could be rich sources of travel content. For some reason, the idea never really caught on at Sabre and while I’ve never forgotten about it, I haven’t pursued it either.
Well, several weeks ago, my aggregator turned up a piece on the Webby Awards. Because of my long-standing ties with travel, I gravitated to the travel category. Some of the nominees like Fodors and Lonely Planet were familiar but I’d never heard of the winner, Igo Ugo. They’ve created a site that’s a reference tool for travelers, much along the lines of Terry Jones’ original vision. I like the site because in addition the normal, highly popular destinations, they also cover the obscure.
As a matter of fact, they have an editorial staff that rates reviews. So if you find yourself in an unfamiliar city, this might be a way for you to find out what others found interesting.
